Do you experience any of these symptoms?
If your knee pain is keeping you from getting active, you’re clearly in need of help!
Here are the common knee problems that keep you from enjoying an active life.
Sprained Ligaments
Torn or overstretched ligaments, the tissues that hold the bones together. This is caused by a sudden twist of the knee or getting a direct blow on the knee.
Bursitis
Inflammation of bursae, a fluid-filled sac near your knee joint that provides cushion. This develops from frequent and sustained pressure on the knee during strenuous activities.
Torn cartilage
Trauma to the knee that tears the meniscus, the cartilage that acts as shock absorbers. This results from sudden twists on your knee while bearing weight on it.
Tendonitis
Inflammation of knee tendons, the tissue that connects muscles to bones. This develops from overuse of a tendon during running, jumping, or any activities that repetitively stress the knee.
Arthritis
Osteoarthritis is the progressive wearing away of the cartilage in the knee joint while Rheumatoid Arthritis causes joints to become inflamed and destroys the knee cartilage.

Substituting jumping, running, and other high-impact activities for lower-impact activities like walking and biking. This lifestyle change prevents overuse of the knee and provides relief.
Prescription and over-the-counter pain relief drugs are available to lessen knee inflammation, thereby also reducing your pain.
Cortisone injection, also known as H&L injection, is a powerful anti-inflammatory treatment to reduce your pain. It can be injected into your area of concern with minimal side effects.
Physical therapy, which includes stretching and strengthening exercises, is a critical part of recovery because this helps ease the pain while also improving your range of motion.
Surgery is the last resort if you’re still in pain after non-surgical and minimally invasive treatments. This includes partial or total knee replacement or other procedures to ensure lasting relief.

Whenever there is swelling, you first have to do ice therapy because this helps reduce inflammation by decreasing blood flow to the injured area.
If swelling is already managed, you can then do heat therapy to increase blood flow and promote regeneration.
The use of alternating hot and cold therapy is also recommended for rehabilitation after strenuous exercise regimes.
If you still experience pain after doing hot and cold therapies, resting, and taking pain medications, you are advised to immediately consult an orthopaedic specialist.
Delaying consultation may result in a more serious knee injury if not treated immediately.
At Spire Othopaedic Centre, we focus first on non-surgical and minimally invasive treatments for knee injuries. This includes activity modification, physical therapy, and pain medications.
Surgery is our last resort and only an option when conservative methods have failed to relieve your pain.
The primary goals of knee replacement surgery are to restore mobility and relieve pain. Research suggests that a typical knee replacement lasts at least 20 years in about 80 percent of patients. This makes patients enjoy their favorite activities without pain.
Healing depends largely on your overall health, body type, and lifestyle. With proper care, rest, and therapy, your knee replacement can heal after several weeks from your procedure.
